Itâs later, and sheâs out on the patio, drinking down the water she hopes will hydrate the hangover right out of her.
âLuca?â
The call comes, tentative, and Luca looks up to see her mother approaching. Sheâs wearing a blue dress that trails on the ground, her hair loose, and it makes her look younger, some prairie woman walking wild. A sharp change from her usual weekday wardrobe of slick sheath dresses and heels, but those are for the office and her mom hasnât been into work since Whitney died. Takes meetings at home, some days, but doesnât go into the office, and Luca isnât sure if thatâs because her mom isnât ready or because neither of her parents wants to leave her home alone.
âHi,â Luca says, closing the book that she wasnât really reading. âYou look nice.â
Emilia waves her off as she sits, leaning her elbows on the table. âI was thinking,â she says, âit would be nice to go out for dinner tonight. Just you and me, actually in a restaurant. What do you think?â
What Luca thinks is that she had planned, tonight, to forget about everything else and spend hours learning how to kiss as good as Naomi does. But it would be nice to spend time with her mom outside the house, like they used to, before everything. âSure,â she says, and her mom brightens. âNaomi can find something else to do, Iâm sure.â
âOh,â Emilia says, âyou have plans?â
âItâs fine, weâll just hang tomorrow.â
Her mom shakes her head. âNo, no,â she says. âItâs okay. You go be with Naomi. Itâs good for you to get out. Be with friends. We can do dinner another night.â
âYou sure?â Luca frowns. âShe wonât mindââ
âItâs okay,â her mom says again, and she reaches out to smooth Lucaâs hair. She sighs, a gusty exhale. âTheyâre going to find the person who did this.â
The abrupt shift is jarring, but Luca keeps still as her mom plays with her hair.
âI know time keeps passing,â Emilia says, âand maybe you feel like nothingâs happening, no oneâs doing anything, but they are. Theyâre going to find them.â
Luca nods slowly.
Are they?
Am I?
âI know,â Luca says after a moment, searching for something that her mom wants to hear, even if she doesnât believe it exactly. âSomeoneâs going to pay.â
Her mom sighs again. âI donât know about that,â she says. âWhat is paying? What is justice, anyway? None of itâs going to bring her backââ She stops, looks away.
âMom?â
Emilia clears her throat and smiles brightly as she turns back to face Luca. âI have a work call in a second,â she says. âIâll be upstairs, if you need me.â She taps her thumb against Lucaâs cheek and then rises. âI love you. Okay?â
âOkay,â Luca says softly as her mom walks away, and there is something about the shape of her momâs shoulders that makes Luca want to weep.
The stinging sensation rushes through her, butâno, not weep. Burn.
Look what someone has done to her family. Stolen her sister, broken her mother.
